life saver

chipmunk.jpg

A chipmunk. This is not the one whose life I saved. This is just a reference chipmunk.

So I saved a life yesterday-- the life of a small, brown, squeaky chipmunk. Here's how it went down.

I was at my computer, surfing the web for, uh... stuff, when I heard a loud rustling noise in the woods out my back window. I went to the window to see what the deal was, and watched as my neighbor's cat emerged with a prize in her mouth-- a dead chipmunk.

"Oh God," I thought. Recognizing the whole "circle of life" that is nature, I hoped that the cat was mercifully efficient and had killed the chipmunk quickly. As the cat walked her prize down the hill towards my deck, I thought, "Oh God, I hope she doesn't present it as a prize to me."

The cat continued to the bottom of the hill, dropped the chipmunk, then laid down on the grass to stare at it. The chipmunk lay frozen on the lawn, upside down, and looked to be quite dead from my perspective. The cat's tail twitched lazily.

I kept watching. The cat got up and looked like she was going to play with the chipmunk, but she laid back down again. After a few minutes of wondering if/when the cat was going to start eating her prize, I started wondering if I would have to do something with the carcass, whether she ate it or not.

Just then, the chipmunk spun around, looked at the cat, then started crawling back up the hill. The cat, not surprisingly, got up and moved towards the chipmunk.

This was my chance.

I started clapping my hands to get the cat's attention, which it did. She spun her head around and glared at me. My clapping also had the fortunate affect of scaring the chipmunk (or snapping it out of its daze). It ran like hell up the hill, squeaking, like chipmunks do. The cat ran after it.

I clapped louder, but the cat ignored me. The chipmunk made it back to the woods, and the cat sat at the edge, trying to find it. I ran downstairs and out onto my deck, and clapped again to get the cat's attention. She turned and looked at me, then proceeded back down the hill to the edge of the deck. She sat, looked up at me, and meowed.

Good thing I know this cat and she likes me.

That is all.

eight more years... argh!

I just realized... when Barack Obama becomes the next president in the fall, I'll have to live through eight years of Sean Hannity's self-righteous attacks against everything about Obama... except actual issues.

Why is Hannity so hung up on Obama's former pastor? Because he can't argue against the real issues, so he launches personal attacks that mean nothing.

That is all.
